Want a New Elder Scrolls? Play Queen's Domain, the Old-School RPG Inspired by King's Field – Quick Review

I'm a sucker for a good throwback to the early polygonal 32-bit era – Mouthwashing, Signalis, Crow Country, and Boltgun 2 are some recent favorites that come to mind. The latest one I've locked in on is Queen's Domain, a fantasy RPG that's as if an Elder Scrolls game was made for the PlayStation 1. Actually, it's explicitly inspired by FromSoftware's pre-Dark Souls series King's Field, where slow, deliberate first-person combat and exploration complemented punishing difficulty (which would later become FromSoft's signature, of course). But as much as Queen's Domain draws clear inspiration or shares similarities, it's a singular experience in 2026 that, so far, wields the intended friction of an old-school game wonderfully.

Washed ashore on a jungle island after your ship is sucked through the sea by a demonic queen, you're alone and in danger. Human-sized lady bugs and crickets lunge at you and follow you around, and the only thing you have to defend yourself in the early minutes is a rusted sword offered by a few survivors. Combat is tedious in these opening moments; avoid crickets by backpedaling when their animation starts, circle-strafe bugs when their wings flutter, and bunnyhop to hopefully avoid lasers shooting from those pesky eye plants stuck to the walls (which can shoot at you from a mile away). It's not an enticing or inviting start, but I had faith I'd strike a pile of gems if I just kept digging.

Getting Your Bearings

There are no quest markers, waypoints, or highlighted paths, just a rounded compass pulled straight out of King's Field. As someone who loves less handholding in exploration, I felt an obligation to see if Queen's Domain was doing this design philosophy justice. So, I pushed forward slowly, facing each enemy and navigating the tropical ruins carefully, waiting for a breakthrough as everything from resurrected skeletons to dragonflies wanted to kill me.

With just a faint glint on an off-shore mound, I found a belt of throwing knives to add to my measly arsenal. Important items are quite hard to identify in the world since they blend into the pixelated art style, so it took me longer than I'd like to admit to find these knives. Cool, I can finally kill those annoying eye plants, and also hit deep-seated switches next to big stone doors; one as a shortcut back to a save point and one to an underground crypt. You're not told to do any of this, but with enough poking and prodding at the world itself, you make these kinds of discoveries naturally.

Queen's Domain is a singular experience in 2026 that, so far, wields the intended friction of an old-school game wonderfully.

Along the way, I picked up a spear that does piercing damage and a wooden club to do blunt damage, both of which complement the slash damage of my rusted sword – which I'd also leveled up in proficiency just from using it. Now the weapon triangle came into focus: each enemy is weak, neutral, or resistant to different damage types, so weapon switching became part of the plodding combat dance. I should also mention that stamina is the biggest factor in damage output – each attack depletes the stamina bar, and the more stamina you have in store, the more damage you do. It recovers quickly, but you can't just spam attacks to get through enemies, which further emphasizes a calculated approach to combat.

In the underground crypt I mentioned, things started to flow smoother as I understood this dynamic and got better at reacting to attack patterns. Enemies are designed to be primitive in the spirit of old games, with one-note attacks and predictable behaviors, and it's when you have to juggle multiple enemies where the more interesting challenge comes in. With the club's alternate attack, I could lunge at skeletons and get out of the way before they do their own lunging stab, and charging up my primary attack meant I could clear crickets in fewer swipes.

Since there are no autosaves and death means losing precious progress (save points are deliberately infrequent), finding a gate key at the end of the crypt raised the tension even further – now, I just needed to survive to make it back to my lone save point. This is another old-school design decision that, while it can be frustrating, complements Queen's Domain’s world design and the overall way it approaches challenge.

The key opened a gate back on a pier along the shore, which then led to a closed arena for the first real boss fight. I saw the screen-wide health bar pop up, and damn. The skeletal Shrine Guardian was bigger and more aggressive than anything before it, and caused knockdown with charged up sword slashes. Escaping its range was the toughest part and I got my ass beat the first try, but…aha! The spear's alternate attack is also a super-fast backdash, so what if I baited the boss and backdash-attacked, and then unloaded throwing knives while kiting it as I waited for my stamina to recover? Light work.

Domain Expansion

This highlighted the importance of alternate attacks, and defeating it rewarded me with a new, pristine holy sword with an alt attack that lets you briefly glide through the air. Sweet – higher damage, cooler looking, and a new way to explore… hold up, this opens up so many pathways I thought inaccessible! A broken bridge led to an important discovery for the main quest, as well as a new magic torch weapon; tree branches acting as platforms led to an area where I'd fight through waves of skeletons and bugs, and then use my magic torch to light up a tower needed to progress. Cryptic scriptures would poke at my curiosity about the world and lead me forward without outright telling me, and cracks in the sides of broken buildings contained actual rewards and key items like an airdash upgrade.

If I had to point to one thing I think is genius about Queen's Domain, it's the way its level design naturally guides you in exploration. In the absence of a map, you have to rely on examining the world for visual cues and remembering its layout. You'll need to commit to memory the areas you haven't fully explored and which paths you should return to after unlocking something new. What you're fundamentally asked to do isn't groundbreaking, but how it puts the onus on you to figure things out makes the experience so much more interesting.

Consumable healing items are scarce early on, and resting at save points respawns enemies – it's dangerous out there, and heading out to hopefully make progress is daunting. Issues like getting caught on geometry during attacks can be infuriating when survival is at stake, and some enemy types are just tedious to handle. A few frustrations can chip at my enthusiasm, but I'm willing to wade through those rougher waters because within these seemingly antiquated design principles is an RPG that's oddly refreshing and satisfying.

If I had to point to one thing I think is genius about Queen's Domain, it's the way its level design naturally guides you in exploration.

Moment-to-moment pacing changed quite a bit throughout the Water Temple area, which I cleared at about six hours into my playthrough. The dungeon crawling itself was paced really well; I never felt lost and the layout balanced being intuitive and provoking curiosity. It already dawned on me that this had a metroidvania edge with expanded abilities opening new paths forward; that much was clear when I got a second airdash upgrade here to cross a huge gap to make it to the last leg of the dungeon. I got a lot more comfortable with combat, feeling loosened up with a growing arsenal that included a dual damage-type morning star and the magic torch's fireballs. Even then, it contained some tough battles against poisonous sea creatures and pincer bugs throughout this lengthy dungeon, still requiring careful approaches informed by using your limited capabilities in smart ways – which would be further tested in the dungeon's boss fight against a corrupted king whale who spawned adds and crashed waves of poison water.

Emerging from the sewers afterward and lighting another tower, I found a teleporter that also indicated that I had at least eight more areas ahead. Now, I could firmly grasp the scope of Queen's Domain, and as I approached the next area, the cursed and spiraling library of the Tower of Knowledge, I felt this adventure was going to get deeper. But it's one where I was going to grow with it, evident in the way I took down its door boss, the Skeletal Executioner, with nary a scratch by dodging its axe projectiles, casting my torch, and charging my holy sword. I've entered a flow state.

The Queen's Gambit

Part of me is thinking about how it can keep up the momentum, handle power scaling, and evolve in ways that'll continue to surprise. From scavenging ancient coins for slicker weapons and charms to boost stats, those little rewards have been nice to chew on. Walking into a new region piques my curiosity as much as it instills an unsettling vibe, both intrigued and scared of what new enemies lie ahead. Each bit of progress showed me something new and built me up as a player in ways that weren't just leveling and a stat sheet.

What I thought was a straightforward homage to generations passed has so far been a smart twist on an old-school RPG experience. Queen's Domain is modernized in a way that doesn't compromise its adherence to being a tough, sometimes obtuse, throwback.

Queen's Domain is modernized in a way that doesn't compromise its adherence to being a tough, sometimes obtuse, throwback.

Audio design has been key in building atmosphere and complementing the pseudo-PS1 aesthetic, too. The crackling of fires are as detailed as the retro-sounding battle cries of enemies, footsteps having me checking corners and turning around just in case, and the not-so-fantasy but fittingly lo-fi soundtrack got some earworms I'm humming along to as I write this. This all may seem gimmicky on the surface, but there's intentional design that makes it stand out from so many retro-inspired games. (You can also smooth out the pixelated look if you want, but I'd argue it's necessary).

Yes, I know it's not an expansive open world with reactive NPCs, branching quests, and dialogue choices, but Queen's Domain is scratching that itch for first-person fantasy RPG combat that you'd get from Elder Scrolls. It's got some fantastic dungeon crawling and it’s also an interesting way to look back and better understand what King's Field was trying to do all those years ago through something palatable in the modern era. And these opening hours are illustrative of how smart level design and a good bit of friction can make for unique experience that still has more beneath the surface.

It's been a hard-earned six hours, and there's so much more to see. If the bestiary is anything to go by, I've only encountered about 40 of the 188 enemies in Queen's Domain. This is going to be a long journey, but it's one I'm going to stay on until the wheels fall off. The thing I'm keeping in mind is if there's a deeper game underneath when the novelty wears off, and if it can sustain the sense of wonder it has delivered so far. Of course, this is not a full review since this seems to be a massive game, but Queen’s Domain has the makings of a sleeper hit.
